Mission: Who We Are
Speak Up exists to transform the world on behalf of the poor.
Our mission is to create a new reality for girls in poverty.
We will pursue this mission by building an international network of Justice Centers which speak up for the poor, particularly girls in poverty.
Goals: What We Do
We advocate for girls in poverty in three inter-connected ways:
For the past six years, Speak Up has funded and helped to direct the expansion of a home for girls-at-risk, the Alingon Home in Khulna, Bangladesh. We are pleased that this funding will continue in 2017 and beyond, helping the Alingon girls thrive. Alingon is home to 22 girls and young women who are now in school and out of a place of potential exploitation, with the freedom to pursue their dreams. Please visit our Girls’ Homes page to learn more about this project.
We are looking for new opportunities to help catalyze and fund the growth of similar homes for girls born into brothels, rescued from trafficking, or otherwise at risk of exploitation and abuse. Please contact Speak Up if you are interested in partnering with us on funding or operating a home for girls-at-risk.
We run a Girls Education Program which sponsors girls in poverty to stay in school and on the path to success. We want to help transform the way the world thinks about poor girls, and to ensure that girls in poverty are free to live up to their fullest potential. Our long-term goal is to help thousands of girls in poverty finish their education, get professional training, then return to serve their community and country as servants to the poor. From girls in poverty to themselves being advocates for the poor!
We investigate human rights abuses and do practical casework for the poor, particularly working on cases of violence and abuse against girls in poverty. We partner with the justice system and local police to handle cases of illegal child marriage; kidnapping and rape; and other forms of sexual abuse and harassment.
